One Reliance Share Gets You Two Shots at the Jio IPO

India's biggest-ever IPO will almost certainly be oversubscribed, and that makes allotment a lottery. But there is a simple, legal way to buy a second ticket: own at least one Reliance Industries share.

Jio Platforms' IPO, reported to open on October 21, 2026, includes a quota reserved for Reliance shareholders. Eligible investors can bid once in that quota and once in the normal retail category, from the same PAN.

How the trick works

Your bidCategoryLimit
Bid 1Retail (at least 35% of the net issue)Up to ₹2 lakh
Bid 2Reliance shareholder quota (up to about 2.7 crore shares)Up to ₹2 lakh

Two separate pools mean two separate draws. The shareholder pool is also smaller and usually less crowded than general retail.

Who qualifies

  • You hold at least one RIL share in demat form on the record date.
  • You bid using the same PAN as that shareholding.
  • You keep each bid under ₹2 lakh.

There is no minimum holding. One share is enough.

The catch: the record date

The record date is the date the red herring prospectus (RHP) is filed, and it hasn't been announced yet. A Reliance share bought too close to it may not settle into your demat in time. If you want the quota, buy now rather than the night before.

Two more things to know:

  • No free shares. Reliance shareholders get a separate queue to apply in, not an entitlement. This is a 100% fresh issue, so no shares are handed out.
  • One bid per category. Two bids in the same category from one PAN can get both rejected.

Your timeline

  1. Now: buy one RIL share if you don't own one.
  2. When the RHP lands: check the price band, lot size and exact quota size.
  3. October 21–23 (reported): bid in retail and in the shareholder quota, at the cut-off price.
  4. Around October 26: check allotment on the KFin Technologies site.
  5. Around October 28: listing day. IPO shares have no lock-in.
